Why did my traffic drop? Free GA4 traffic drop checker

Compare a recent period with the one of the same length right before it. The checker breaks the change in sessions down by channel, source / medium, landing page, country and device, and tells you where the drop comes from and what usually causes it.

How it works

  1. Sign in with Google and pick a GA4 property. Access is read-only.
  2. Choose a period. It is compared with the period of the same length right before it.
  3. See the change broken down by channel, source, landing page, country and device, with the likely cause.

Common reasons website traffic drops suddenly

Broken tracking

A removed or duplicated GA4 tag, a new cookie banner or a site redesign can make traffic look like it vanished overnight. Days with almost no sessions are the giveaway.

Google algorithm updates

Core and spam updates shift rankings for many pages at once. If the drop is in Organic Search and starts on an update date, rankings are the likely cause.

Lost rankings for key pages

A handful of pages often carry most organic traffic. If one of them was changed, redirected or outranked, the drop concentrates on that landing page.

Bot traffic going away

Bots without a referrer are counted as Direct. When a crawler stops, Direct sessions fall while real visitors and conversions stay the same.

Paid campaigns ending

An exhausted budget, a paused campaign or disapproved ads remove paid sessions immediately. The drop shows up in Paid Search, Paid Social or Display.

Seasonality

Holidays, weekends and industry cycles move traffic every year. Compare with the same period last year before assuming something broke.

Frequently asked questions

Is the traffic drop checker really free?

Yes. You only need a Google account with access to a GA4 property. To keep it free for everyone, there is a daily limit of 20 checks.

What access does it need?

Read-only access to Google Analytics, granted through Google's verified sign-in. The tool cannot change your properties and does not save your results. You can revoke access at any time in your Google account.

Why compare with the previous period?

A drop only means something against a baseline. Comparing with the same number of days right before shows what changed recently; for seasonal sites, also compare with the same period last year.

How is this different from GA4's own insights?

GA4 shows you the numbers. This checker ranks which channel, page, country or device explains the drop and turns that pattern into a likely cause. GA Sentry runs the same kind of checks automatically every week.
